Hardcore Vs Casual

I, like a lot of people, have a life. I have a wife, Kids a dog and a full time job. My job demands that I work 10 hours a day, my wife demands my time every evening, my kids demand my time on my days off, my dog...well...my dog demands that I clean up his poop every day....If anyone could point out at which moment I can turn on my xbox 360 and play a couple of hours of grand theft auto, I would like to be informed..because I dont have that kind of time.

I have probably played more time on my DS than my 360, but even thats been limited.

In a 24 hour society that demands things be made for 'on the go' its a wonder how hard core gaming is surviving. Kellogs have given us cereal bars because we dont have time to make bloody breakfast in the morning, Text messaging is the communication choice of millions because we dont have time to have a bloody conversation. We get delivered second rate meat from Ocado because we cant be bothered to go to the supermarket and look for it ourselves. I am sure there are countless other examples of these types of things...but I dont have time to think!

So what is out there for 'on the go' gaming? The DS and the PSP! Or if you want a console that does not use much brain power or take up too much time...the Wii!

Taking away the fact that on all of these systems they have a lack of quality games, what they do provide is time to play your games.

With the PS3 and 360 you have to turn it on, find your game, put it in, let it load up..who knows how long that might take...then learn the controls...or remind yourself because you have not played it for months. Play the game. But its even more complicated than that. Playing a hard core game is long winded, sometimes difficult, sometimes awkward, sometimes sole destroying. Yes some games are awesome, but even they are few and far between on the two main console players. But everything in the hardcore world seems to drag.

On the flip side...with a DS, turn it on, pick a game from your case (all the games are neatly there in one place, and on the move) put it in, it loads in double quick time and the games are usually pick up and play and you can have an ample play before you even get to work! How simple.

Imagine you have 30 minutes to play a game. Do I pick the DS or the 360? By the time I get into a 360 game it will be almost time to turn the console off again...but with the DS, PSP or Wii...I can get a good session in.

Do the Wii and DS sales represent that train of thought? With sales of just the DS alone outselling the sales of the PS3 and 360 combined, month after month, are people needing a gaming system that is easy to use and quick to play? Are people fed up of complicated gaming? I know I dont get the time to enjoy the 360.

Dont misunderstand me, I love hardcore gaming. I would love to have more time to play hardcore gaming. But the DS is so much easier and quicker to get into, that sometime its just the default gaming system of choice.

Is Hardcore gaming becoming an elitist area? Much like PC gaming. If its is, how much longer can the PS and Xbox franchises survive, do they need to move with the times and provide more accessible gaming?
