Hitachi made the CPU inside the Sega Saturn. A cross licencing agreement meant that Hitachi were allowed to make there own Saturn
variant. Because of this the Hi Saturn was born. It came out less than a year after the original Saturn was released. Hitachi billed this machine as a complete entertainment system. They also completely redesigned the machine, making it smaller and more compact than the Sega Saturn. In addition to the standard Saturn ports it has two microphone inputs for karaoke use, a GPS antenna port, video and audio inputs, a TV-tuner port and a line-out port. This was all standard equipment.
Famously the Hi Saturn could be used as a Sat Nav in car system. This came with a decent LCD screen which had a higher resolution than any other games system of the time.
Whilst the Hi Saturn was being used in-car an overide meant that the games console could not be used.
It is possible that only 2000 Hi Saturns were ever produced. The system was around £500. more expensive than a normal Saturn putting it out of most gamers reach.This adds to its rarity considerably. It is one of the rarest post NES consoles.
