General Information

Due to the success of the Genesis/Megadrive, Sega relaunched the Master System. They had to buy the rights to the Master System back from Tonka who Sega had sold the system rights too. Its a low-cost Master System that lacks the reset button, expansion port (which was never used), and card slot of the original. The card slot was omitted because there were only about a dozen card games. Any card game can be packaged as a cartridge, with some of these re-released in this way. Since the card slot was used as a connector to synchronize the 3D glasses with the original Master System, the Master system 2 could not use the 3D glasses. Despite the Master System II now being marketed by Sega, it was too late for the machine in America and the public simply weren't interested. As a result of poor sales, Sega decided to withdraw the Master System II from the American market in 1992. Support for the console continued in Europe until 1996, where it was eventually dropped to allow Sega to concentrate on the Mega Drive's successor, the Saturn.
