Welcome to retrohead, a site dedicated to retro consoles and classic consoles we really aim to make this a Wikki site to talk about amongst the retro community. Its early days and there is a lot of work to do.
The rules are simple. This is a Wikki so naturally by its nature you are free to add or edit what you wish to. We ask that you read the following Q&A prior to adding or editing to ensure you keep within the scheme of the Wikki.
There are currently 21 Questions Answered
Please read this first: The following steps will show you in simple terms how you can add pages to the 'Console A-Z' pages, this is the main area of the Wikki that you can contribute to. See the Nintendo N64 system page for a good example.
- So you have clicked on the 'Console A-Z' in the navigation menu and you see that 'Manufacturer X home' is not listed. You want to add 'manufacturer X home' to the list. First of all you need to create a 'Homepage' like 'Sega home' or 'Microsoft home' already has. Just go to 'add page' and add the 'template' 'Photo Album option1' and name it 'Manufacturer X Home'. Then add a picture of the console you wish to add (or more if you know of more). Once this is done you will want to create a sub page for each console. Click on your now newly created 'Manufacturer X home' page and then click 'add page' again and use 'template' 'New Console page'. This is the basic guideline for adding information on each console. Here you will add all the information you wish to add. If you wish, you will see you can add a 'manufacturer' page entitled 'manufacturer 'X' 'the company' and add information on the manufacturer using another blank page template. This will be entered straight after the manufacturer 'home' page.
- Quite simply have a look at the structure of current manufacturers pages within 'Console A-Z' and you will get a much better overview on what to add and when.
- Remember if the manufacturer is already there but wish to add just a console then follow the above instructions minus the instructions on adding the manufacturer page.
- See the Nintendo N64 page for an example of how a console page should and will look.
- Remember it may sound a lot to recall but once you have a little look around and have a go at adding pages you will eventually be doing it like clock work. It really is easy!
If you are unsure what your doing, visit Wiki Sandbox and have a play around, its designed to be used as a test area so it does not matter if things go wrong. Remember some tutorials in this Q&A guide may appear to sound complicated but you will soon find that Retrohead is one of easiest sites to use for editing purposes as it is built with ease of use in mind.

Q. How do I add an extra box to a table? A. Go to the edit function and click on any one of the more central boxes of the table in question. You will see a little cross appears with an arrow either side of it. One along the top of the box and one to the side of the box. One will have arrows above and below the cross the other will have arrows to the left and right of it. To create another row just click the arrow that points downwards (or upwards if you need to, the side to side arrows create another column which you should not need in most cases). This will create another box for you. To delete a row (or column) added in error click the cross, this will delete a row (or column). Or simply click the back button on the Easy Edit tool bar.
Q. How do I add a link? A. Go to the Edit mode and highlight the word you want to add a link to (click the left mouse button and drag across the word, this will highlight the text you want to add a link to). Click the Link icon in the Easy edit tool bar (Has a chain link icon followed by the word 'Link') and paste the link (...you previously copied from whatever auction or site you want to link to...) into the box that appears. Save the content. You have your link.
Q. If I am starting a new console page using the 'New Console page' template, do I have to keep to the format like the style of writing for example? A. We ask that you follow the 'New console page' template format for the main page. The reason is because we wish to keep the Wikki looking smart. Any variations will be edited to the original format.
Q. What pages can I add to or edit? A. At this time you can add to the Development pages, the Console A-Z (Individual console pages only, not the A-Z list), you can also add to the Members Area (your area only, not other members) pages and Kudos League page. Please do not alter any other pages.
Q. Can I add whatever information I like? A. As long as you are sure you are adding the information to the correct page then you are free to add whatever information you like as long as it is true to the best of your knowledge.
Q. Can I write in my own words and style? A. We ask that when you write it meets the needs of the majority. Most people want to be informed and therefore people dont want to read about personal experiences etc. within a console page. Keep it informative and chronological where appropriate.
Q. Can I delete a whole page if I think it needs deleting through bad writing or factually incorrect information? A. No. Please only edit what needs editing. If you think the piece you are reading could be written better in its whole, or you believe the information to be completely incorrect or written very badly then please email Retrohead at contact@retrohead.co.uk and let Retrohead decide. You will be informed if you will be allowed to re-write the entire piece. This is purely to ensure that people don't get carried away with trying to 'take over' the Wikki. Although we appreciate it is a Wikki we are also trying to ensure its as much a community as well.
Q. What will happen if I ignore these rules? A. Unless it is seen as a genuine error you run the risk of being banned from the Wikki, this is a community as much as a Wikki and arrogance will not be tolerated.
Q. Any tips on adding pages?
A. Please ensure you add console pages to the correct manufacturer. Ensure you are adding in the correct place i.e.. careful not to add a page about 3DO's in the middle of the Nintendo pages. Duplicating work elsewhere on the Wikki will see your work moved to another area or deleted. Also you can not add pages that do not relate to a console or 'system'
Q. Can I add any console or system? A. We are aiming to have a page on every system in history, or at the very least European and American systems with some obvious well known ones from Japan as well. However if you know of one from other parts of the world then feel free to add that too. We even have Brazillian only consoles listed here.
Q. What do you consider a 'console' or 'system'? A. All consoles and handhelds, but please only include home computers if you feel it is needed. We don't want every home computer that has ever existed listed here. Just the key ones.
Q. Why do you have Neo Geo hand-held B&W and Color listed separately? A. You will find other examples like this around the site. Some people may have heard of a Neo Geo hand-held but might not have heard that there is a black & white and a color available. This Wikki aims to open up peoples eyes so we want to list as many as possible in a seperate system page. We also understand that some systems were released multiple times just with slightly different specs. What we recommend is that if the subsequent releases of a system have significant changes to how it looks then list it separately or if the released system has a significant difference to it specification wise then list it. Below are some examples to help you out.
Nintendo DS - Page to itself Nintendo DS Lite - Put on the same page as 'Nintendo DS' as the changes are not significant enough.
Neo Geo Handheld B&W - Page to itself Neo Geo Handheld Color - Page to itself as the color change is significant which means there are also new games built for it.
PS3 - Page to itself PS3 - Cheaper release with less ports etc... - Put on same page as 'PS3' because the changes are not significant enough.
If a system release is the same as the original but just re-designed for looks in the main, then list this on a new page as the look change is significant. For example the Atari 2600 'Woody' and Atari 2600 'JR' will go on seperate pages despite being essentially the same machine.
Q. Do you list hybrid systems? A. Yes we do and feel free to add any you know. However note that we only accept official hybrid systems. Systems that were released by genuine companies, like the 'Panasonic Q' we do not accept home made or adapted Hybrids.
Q. How do I become a moderator? A. You must have been a registered member for a minimum of six months. After this time you will be automatically assessed to see if you are consistent with your quality of postings/additions and edits and to see if you keep to the Retrohead format. If you pass then you will be offered the position of Moderator. If you fail (which does not mean you are not a valued member) then we will look at it again in a further six months. If you fail on that occasion then you will be, again, looked at in 6 months. If after that you still fail then you will not be granted Moderator status at any time. Remember it is an automatic process so please don't apply. If you wonder why we are so strict it is because we want to ensure that Retrohead does not become the victim of deliberate misuse. If you fail or are not selected it is not because you are not valued, the tests are strict and there is a very strict criteria to becoming a moderator known only to admin members.
Q. I am sure I have seen some of the things written on this Wikki written elsewhere, how? A. A small amount of the things you see written here will indeed have been taken from other sites. It would be impossible to gather the worlds knowledge on Systems and arcades and such like without using the knowledge of other sites. Our uniqueness is that all that information is gathered in one place. While our passion is retro consoles and games we cant possibly claim to know everything there is out there to know personally. In return we do link as many of the sites as possible that we use to gather information. See our 'Link Up' page. However we try to ensure that most of the content is written in a unique way with unique information where possible and we actively encourage this and ask members not to blanket copy and paste from other sites. Please try to be different and unique in what or how you write your articles. Wikipedia entries are linked, Wikipedia rules state that content can be copied as long as there is a link back to the Wikipedia site.
Q. Copyright issues? A. The Wikipedia issue has already been addressed in the question above. Retrohead never knowingly allows content to be copied and pasted from any other site without prior express permission and in any case should always be linked back to the original source. In regards to pictures, Retrohead sources most of its images via Google image search or from our own personal collections but rarely by going direct to a particular site. Occassionaly we do use pictures directly from other sites, in most cases we do try and seek prior permission and again link our sources. In most cases nearly every site we use is linked via our console link-up page. If you feel that an image has been used from your site and you have not been credited then please contact us and we will ensure you are clearly sourced or upon request we may remove the image. As a non-profit site that exists for enthusiasts of Retro gaming products we hope that most site owners will see the benefit of shared data as simple as a photo and are satisfied with the links we make to their own sites as a way of thanks. As a point of law in the UK non-profit sites like this can use images in the public domain under Fair usage law. Retrohead makes no money and this site is fundamentaly an educational site which would come under 'fair useage'. Thanks to our friends and affiliates who allow us to use their images once in a while.
Q. Do I have to add anything whilst being a member? A. Not at all. You can be a member just to look up information, learn, be educated or even contact members to ask questions about systems and hopefully in a place like this you will find your answer. Also you can find more links to other helpful sites than you will find anywhere else in one place. If you can add some information though, no matter how small it will of course be welcomed! Enjoy the site whatever your purpose for joining.
Q. Can I say what I like within the threads and discussion forums? A. You can say what you like, start a debate, argue and voice your opinion. We do ask that you don't 'gang up' on other members. Please behave like adults. Serious cases of abuse will not be tolerated. We recognise freedom of speech and therefore don't wish to censor people. Act like adults be treated like adults.
Q. What is 'R/S' on the system pages?
A. This is the rarity/sought guide. See the 'RS Guide' page for more info.Q. Half the console pages appear incomplete, why? A. There are two things to note 1) This is a Wikki, not a normal site that you come to and expect everything to be complete. If you can see its wrong, help contribute by setting the page up correctly. 2) This site is currently undergoing a long-haul facelift. The pages should look like that of the N64, the pages that look different have yet to be updated. Please bear with us or help contribute by helping us complete the facelift.
